At the end of Critical Role’s The Legend of Vox Machina season 1 (animated by Titmouse Animation), Vox Machina’s merry messy band restored the sun and justice in Percy’s home kingdom of Whitewood. But when they returned to their home base, the kingdom of Emon, a dragon force called the Chroma Conclave descended upon the region. And in Season 2, the band will face more than just dragons, according to the cast, who gathered at the 2022 New York Comic Con.

The ragtag Vox Machina crew includes the half-elven archer twins Vax (Liam O’Brien) and Vex Vessar (Laura Bailey), the goliath barbarian Grog Strongjaw (Travis Willingham), the leprechaun bard Scanlan Shorthalt (Sam Riegel), the leprechaun cleric Pike Trickfoot (Ashley Johnson), the insecure druid Keyleth (Marisha Ray), and the tortured marksman Percy de Rolo (Taliesin Jaffe). Dirty, drunk and morally grey, they are easy to underestimate, but they get the job done. The main cast and original Critical Role Dungeon Master, Matthew Mercer (who plays several roles and will be speaking more next season), led the NYCC talk about what to expect from Season 2, which will arrive in January 2023.

Where the characters are in Vox Machina Season 2

The panel kicked off with a clip of Scanlan singing a rap song that sums up the entire season 1. More music has been confirmed for Season 2, and it won’t be sung exclusively by Scanlan the Bard. “There’s a song in season 2 that I’m very proud of. It is very sweet and also very stupid. I’ve sung to death,” Reigel said. “Multiple people on this stage will be singing in Season 2.”

Will the rogue sex-loving Scanlan find love? Riegel revealed: “He’s going to evolve a little bit. He’s a horndog and a silly singer. In the coming season, he’ll be a mature singer and a horndog. He finds himself not wanting to hook up on his own anyway. He may not find it.” [love]. Maybe he’ll find love in a place we wouldn’t expect.”

The relationship between Vex and Vax may falter. According to O’Brien, “That will be questioned. They will have to grow outside and with each other.”

“And facing trauma together,” Bailey added with sibling energy. Bailey promised “the moment when she” [Vex] collapses [her emotional] walls… It’s my favorite moment of the season.” O’Brien also vaguely teased “an upgrade” for Vex.

Johnson said Pike and Grog’s friendship will also be put to the test, but “can’t tell what it is.” She did share that “Pike may be healing more. And maybe some singing. Her personal journey with the Everlight continues.” Last season, Pike went through a crisis of faith and was temporarily split from the group to recover, this time: “She can definitely stay for a while this time… Maybe we’ll meet some people from Pike’s past.”

Unwrapping Pike’s past in Season 2 means her bestie Grog will also reveal his history. Williamson said that “Grog is always looking for the newest and fastest way to increase his power to protect his friends. We’re going to see elements of his backstory, who Grog is and why he is the way he is.”

Now that fans have seen Percy’s not-so-pretty Whitewood history, Jaffe shared what happened to Percy after his traumatic homecoming: “Percy will spend some time figuring out the best way to be ashamed of everything. and shame on him he is ever ready.” There seems to be no end to the lingering trauma of his latest journey: “Percy is going to make a series of very horrific decisions that will negatively affect everyone. That’s character growth!”

Speaking of Percy’s trauma, Mercer marked the Briarwood bow campaign as “the moment when the” Vox Machine story became personal, and the stakes were dark and real. It went from lighthearted fun to accessible trauma, thirst for revenge… a dark place. That was when we all realized in our campaign that we as performers could enter these deep dark human places.”

Meanwhile, Keyleth grows like her vines. Ray teased, “I’m most excited about the growth in her relationships. You know, plural…” The crowd cheered before adding, “It’s probably not as dramatic as you think.”

The legend of Vox Machina 3?

So what will Vox Machina face with these new winged terrors on the horizon? Mercer explained to those unfamiliar with the campaign:[The Conclave] is a group of dragons that have formed a union with its own tension and dynamism. It is a serious threat to Exandria and we get to see how the world is dealing with it and how [Vox Machina] struggling with the idea of responsibility that is rather unexpected.”

Adjusting a fleshy bow with the Conclave was a challenge. So Reigel dropped this bombshell: “It’s a daunting task to adapt it to one season. We were trying to find out if it was possible. Luckily, we got the green light for season 3.” All over the audience, Reigel cheered them on expecting the Conclave arc to extend into Season 3.

“There are wonderful dark moments in Season 2,” Mercer teased. “I am excited that the Vox Machine story begins to enter the realm where the stories are personal and step into a space that is cosmic and their destinies intertwined with elements of the world greater than themselves.”

Willingham added: “The action sequences are crazier. We’re taking it to a whole new level. Season 1 was just a warm-up. Now you get Vox Machina, what their trauma is and how they’re going to resolve it. When we pitched it, Amazon thought : ‘Is that how it happened?’ [in the Critical Role source material]?’ and I said, ‘damn it.’”

The panel also previewed an exclusive Season 2 clip that picks up where Season 1 left off, with the dragons attacking the kingdom and Vox Machina fleeing the chaos. When the clip ended, Reigel joked, “Right after that clip, Mario arrives and says, ‘What, I’m Chris Pratt?’ Sorry my Apologies.”
