Former UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson has hit back at Khabib Nurmagomedov after claiming Ferguson is only fighting for the money now.
Ferguson and Nurmagomedov have been bitter rivals for years, despite never facing each other in the Octagon. They were supposed to fight many times over their career before a series of cancellations made the fight look doomed.
Ferguson lost to Nate Diaz in the UFC 279 headliner earlier this year, losing via late submission. He was supposed to face Li Jingliang in a welterweight bout ahead of a host of changes to the event’s main card.
After Ferguson’s fifth straight loss, Nurmagomedov claimed Ferguson’s fighting time was up and suggested he was only fighting for financial reasons.

In a recent tweetFerguson responded to Nurmagomedov’s claim in an impassioned response.
“Oh Fathead, when are you gonna grow a pair of balls and stop writing checks your body can’t cash,” Ferguson tweeted. “Pops would be pissed if he knew how much turd you turned into a eunix. Does that guy even make tiramisu.
Following his loss to Diaz, Ferguson seemed optimistic about his fighting future and seemed open to returning to welterweight and lightweight. Until UFC 279, he fought at lightweight for most of his career, fighting in several interim title bouts.
Nurmagomedov retired in 2020 following the tragic death of his father, Abdulmanap. In his last UFC fight, he defeated Justin Gaethje via second-round submission.
Ferguson, 38, may be past his physical peak, but he doesn’t plan to listen to critics like Nurmagomedov who think he should consider quitting.
