The fact that Mesut Özil actually still plays football has hardly been noticed lately. But it doesn’t matter. After all, he is now making headlines elsewhere: the former German national footballer has become a father again.

“Welcome to the world our little princess Ela” (“Welcome to the world, our little princess Ela”) – with these words Mesut Özil announces that he and his wife Amine have again become parents of a daughter. He also posted a snapshot of the girl on Twitter as she apparently slept in her crib.

It is the second child for the footballer and his wife. The couple already welcomed their first daughter in March 2020. She differs in name from her sister who was born only by one letter: the two-year-old is called Eda.

Özil and his wife, whose birth name was Amine Gülşe and who was dubbed “Miss Turkey” in 2014, have been dating since 2017. The 33-year-old was previously in relationships with Anna-Maria Lagerblom, now wife of rapper Bushido, and former Monrose singer Mandy Capristo. Özil and Gülşe got married in 2019.

The wedding also attracted attention because of a special guest. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was not only present in person, he even acted as a witness.

From 2009 to 2018, Özil played 92 matches for the German national football team. In 2014 he became world champion with the team. His ending his career with the national team was not solely due to his declining athletic performance. He also responded to criticism that, as a player playing for Germany, he allowed himself to be photographed publicly with Erdogan.

At club level, things have been anything but smooth for Ozil lately. He was suspended from Fenerbahçe Istanbul in the spring. He then moved to city rivals and Erdogan club Başakşehir. But here, too, it has hardly been used until now. He was substituted only once for ten minutes in six games.
