Onur Şener, known for the Turkish The Voice offshoot, performs in a bar in Ankara. He would have turned down a music request because he didn’t know the song. A huge fight ensued, in which he was injured in the neck with a glass bottle and died, according to Turkish media.

A Turkish musician died in Ankara as a result of an attack after his performance. Onur Şener did not comply with a music request from the public and was later attacked, broadcaster CNN Türk reported. According to the state news agency Anadolu, five suspects have been brought before the magistrate.

According to CNN Türk, the 45-year-old musician was on stage in front of guests at a bar in the Çankaya neighborhood on Oct. 2 when asked to play a song. However, he couldn’t fulfill the music request because he didn’t know the song himself. A dispute arose between the parties, which led to a fight. The fight is said to have been separated by staff and guests. But when the musician wanted to leave the venue, he is said to have been attacked again by the group, according to “Hürriyet Daily News”. The musician was injured by a glass bottle in the neck. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Artists, politicians and journalists, among others, expressed their outrage about the incident on social media. Among them, rock musician Haluk Levent, who posted a performance video of Onur Şener on Twitter, commemorating him. He expressed his incomprehension that a wish song could cause so much violence. Some voices on the Internet linked this to criticism of the government, accusing it, among other things, of fomenting public animosity.

Family man Onur Şener took part in the Turkish version “O Ses Türkiye” of The Voice in 2013. There he performed the Queen song “Show must go on” together with singer Hadise – with this performance he became famous.
