Queen finds her final resting place in Windsor

Elizabeth II is honored in a procession. The celebrations will culminate in a public service attended by 800 guests, with the monarch being buried in the royal crypt. But in a few hours she will be reburied.

After the funeral service at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, the Queen’s coffin was lowered into the royal crypt. This concluded the evening public portion of the state funeral for Elizabeth II, who passed away on September 8 at the age of 96. The royal crown, scepter and orb that had been on the queen’s coffin during the state funeral were placed on the altar of the church.

About 800 guests attended the celebration at St. George’s Chapel, including members of the Royal Family and politicians, as well as former staff of the Queen. The final funeral of Elizabeth II, who was Queen of Great Britain for 70 years, will take place at 8:30 p.m. CEST in the closest circle of the British Royal Family.

The Queen will be buried twice this Monday. After an afternoon service at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, the monarch was buried in the royal crypt along with her husband Prince Philip, who died on 9 April 2021 at the age of 99. But her coffin only stays there for a short time.

Philip is also reburied

Because in the evening the couple, who have been married for 73 years, are reburied in private. Elizabeth and Philip find their final resting place in the memorial chapel. There are also the Queen’s parents, “Queen Mum” and King George VI., as well as the urn of her younger sister Princess Margaret, who was cremated at her own request – contrary to tradition.

At Philip’s funeral on April 17, 2021, it was already known that his grave would only be temporary. Prince Harry and Meghan were married in the chapel in May 2018 and Prince Philip’s funeral service took place there in April 2021. The chapel is also regularly used for royal baptisms.

The Queen’s state funeral began in the morning with a funeral service at Westminster Abbey. About 2,000 guests attended the service, including numerous monarchs and other heads of state such as US President Joe Biden.

The Queen’s coffin was then carried in a solemn procession to Wellington Arch in Hyde Park and then driven to Windsor in a glass hearse. Numerous people lined the approximately 35-kilometer route to bid the Queen farewell.
